Bicycle Framebuilding Jig + Setup

Details on full setup: https://github.com/andrewsuzuki/makehaven-framebuilding-setup At the core of any bike framebuilding setup is a frame jig (technically a fixture, not a jig). Industry-standard frame jigs run at $3000-5000, but we can make our own for $500-600. We already have an oxy-acetylene setup, which is good for traditional lugged and fillet-brazed construction. While we don't have a TIG welder yet, the jig should be future-proofed with integrated argon purge lines. MIG doesn't work with the thin-walled tubes used in bike frames. In addition to the frame jig, there are some other tools and fixtures we can DIY: - Jig stand $100 - Chain stay mitering fixture $70 - Seat stay mitering fixture $70 - Disc brake fixture $30 - Primitive tube / fork blade bender $30 - O.L.D. gauge $5 - Braze-on clamp/fixture $10 And tools that should probably be purchased instead of DIY'd: - BikeCAD Pro license (up to three machines) $380 - Paragon dummy axles $70 - Paragon tube blocks $75 - Hole saws $50 - Hole saw arbors (for Bridgeport) $35 - Slitting saw + arbor (for Bridgeport) $55 - Dynafile (used) $300 (optional, but handy, and good general-purpose metal finishing tool) Then there are a few more expensive "bike shop" tools that Makehaven doesn't have, but people can just go to Devil's Gear or BSBC for them. I would be happy to sign up as a bicycle framebuilding facilitator so that all of these tools can be put to good use.

New Equipment for Space:

Castable Wax Resin for the FormLab 3B

I think it would open a lot of possibilities if we added castable wax resin to our FormLabs 3B supplies. For example, as a jeweler I do a lot of initial design work with 3D modeling and lost-wax casting. Make Haven doesn't have metal casting equipment, but there are lots of outside casting facilities that will accept shipped models. This sort of resin would enable Make Haven members to model directly for that purpose. It would also be well-paired with more basic wax-carving tools to add an entire new medium to MakeHaven's capabilities. I imagine that the molding and casting facilitators might have some other ideas for ways to incorporate burnout capable wax resin into their work, but that's not my expertise. https://formlabs.com/store/castable-wax-resin/ https://support.formlabs.com/s/article/Using-Castable-Wax-Resin?language=en_US *Cost updated to include print bed and tray.

Anodizing Station for Aluminum, Titanium, Niobium, etc.

We have a lot of tools available for creating parts, but limited options for finishing them. We can buff and paint, and do some bake-on coatings. Sound-absorbing Panels for the Woodshop and Metalshop

The woodshop and metalshop can be quite loud, even when wearing proper hearing protection. Sound-absorbing panels will reduce the noise level. More research needed to determine the best placement (closest to which equipment, walls vs. ceilings, etc), panel type (foam, cotton, fabric stretched over wood frames, etc), aesthetics, and cost. Perhaps we can perform a crude test by hanging blankets on the walls.

Ceramic Resin for FormLabs 3B

Especially now that we’re developing a ceramics area, this would be a great synergy between 3D printing and ceramics. This way we can print very, very complicated and precise parts with the ceramic resin, and then fire them to yield a purely ceramic part. One of the few FormLabs resins that can (through firing) be considered food safe. https://formlabs.com/store/materials/ceramic-resin/ $149 for 1L of resin $149 for a resing tank $99 for a build platform

New Tool for Lending Library:

Woodcarving handtool set

Wouldn't you love to be able to carve a spoon on a lazy Sunday morning on your porch? Or whittle a walking stick by the campfire? If MakeHaven had a set of simple hand carving tools in the lending library you could! To start out with, we could just get a simple pair of a knife and a hook knife. That'd be enough for spoon carving and some simple whittling. A slightly more expansive kit could include a folding handsaw, a small hatchet, a few different gouges, and small chisels. A small mallet might also be useful? In any case, we should also include sharpening tools, which could just be a set of sandpaper and a dowel for any curved tools. And some honing compound. A carry bag would also be nice. I'm a total novice, so others who know more about this please chime in with your suggestions! I found this a useful guide for spoon carving tools: https://www.sylvaspoon.com/blog/2020/6/6/spoon-carving-tools The $100 cost would cover the Mora 106 knife and the Mora 164 hook knife as well as a simple bag and honing compound. Sandpaper we have aplenty at MH :)

9

Space Infrastructure:

Adobe Suite

Why we do not have Adobe: A license is $330.00 per machine/ per year. If we install on the 4 computers plus 2 of the laser cutters that is $2,000 per year for the software. When you consider that Inkscape and Gimp are free and can be used by anyone for free at home too, it seems clear to me that our money and effort in teaching are better spent on the open source versions, even if they have more of a learning curve.

Wild Idea:

Shared Pickup Truck

Many people need to get things to and from MakeHaven but often don't have a large car, or only bike. A pickup truck could be used by staff and members to get lumber, transport large scrap and pickup equipment. Ideally this truck would be kept in the parking garage next to MakeHaven. This would need to be carefully managed, and proper insurance established for each driver. We could use a service like https://fluidtruck.com/ to manage the rental and insurance details. This would have the benefit of enabling us to recapture the costs of keeping the truck. We would also put lots of MakeHaven decals on it, help raise awareness of MakeHaven.

Space Infrastructure:

Remote 3D Printing Monitoring

Sometimes the 3D printers are all busy, and other times they are all free. Sometimes they appear to be busy, but will all be done printing in ten minutes. It would be nice to be able to track the progress of prints across the entire farm using something like OctoFarm or similar. There are definitely challenges to be solved, since I think OctoFarm needs to be on the inside network to talk to the OctoPrint nodes, and then we need a way to expose some status externally. Or maybe we can just do something with webcams. We've had problems with spaghetti prints, too. It might be helpful if we could check remotely on print health as well, before we completely encase print heads in plastic. OctoFarm is free: https://octofarm.net/ If we need webcams, people seem to recommend ~$30 webcams per printer.

New easier to use Brewing System

Our current brewing system is.... quirky. Liam and I are able to get good beer out of it but it's hard to clean, and hard to learn. A new all in one brewing system is relatively inexpensive and should be able to make batches quicker and with less to learn. I think that a basic Anvil Foundry 18 all in one brewing system would be a good match for our space; we can do 5 or 10 gallon batches in it without changing anything, and the whirlpool and recirculation of mash parts of the brew day should work better. One of the best things about this system is that cleaning it out should be much easier since it will fit in the sink The Anvil Foundry 18 brewing system https://www.anvilbrewing.com/foundry-18 Then, ideally, we'd also have a conical fermenter to put the beer into so that we could more easily do things like dumping trub and yeast, and racking off clear beer; and with a brewing system like this we could put the conical fermenter next to the brewing system, and then add a glycol chiller system to keep the fermenter cold like the current chest freezer does. This glycol system could do a lot more for us too; including making a permanent seltzer system so we can have fizzy water on tap and never need cans of La Croix again. For the Conical Fermenter: Having a clean fermenter is absolutely crucial to not have weird unpleasant surprises when making beer, to have easily cleanable hardware is crucial. To easily take apart all joints Tri-Clamp fittings are the brewing industry standard and we would prefer a fermenter with 100% Tri-Clamp fittings and an easy to setup cooling system. The Spike Conical 15 Gal is a great option for this https://spikebrewing.com/products/new-spike-conical-unitank?var=42568685945068 We would also need to add their Cooling coil and a couple other fittings to the listed price. For the glycol system and Furniture to enable badge access to the taps and other improvements we could work on building that using the tools here and it would only require a couple sheets of nice plywood and an AC compressor system that I can find for cheap and convert. Overall the furniture and Glycol cooler would add another $400ish dollars.

Sewing room with one or two newer sewing machines

The space & especially the equipment would benefit of having their own space. This will make sure the machines are kept clean & working properly for years to come. Also fabrics will stay cleaner & free of allergens. Upgraded sewing machines would also benefit the space because they are more versatile.

Chainsaw

Chainsaw for lending library and for woodshop. I've been interested in turning some larger pieces of wood on the lathe and needed to cut them down to size, but the mouth on the band saw was too small. There are no tools in the shop that were able to cut the wood down to size, only hand saws. Dewalt chainsaw (18 in) at home depot $400. 12in $279.

Space Infrastructure:

Remote monitoring of 3d printer area - Web version

Having live streaming of the 3d printer area will allow people to remotely monitor the progress of their prints, seeing if their jobs are complete or if issues occurred and stopped mid way. this can be important on longer running jobs. Additionally will allow people to see if equipment is being utilized without having to come in to the space. IP cameras pointing at all pieces of equipment. WYZE Cam OG 1080p HD Wi-Fi Security Camera - can be of the area or of each printer (35 per printer or 4 to monitor area) Would need someone software savvy to embed the camera feed in to a page on the makehaven.org website. Space Infrastructure:

Real-Time or Close-To-Real-Time Minimum Viable External/Remote 3D Printer Status Check

It would be handy to know how many of the 3D printers available for use are currently in-use, or to check up on a print remotely. I understand the very real concerns regarding exposing 3D printer control interfaces to the public, which is why I instead propose we mirror the most basic of information (whether the device is currently in use, how long is left on a print, etc) to an externally accessible web-page, potentially on the MakeHaven site itself. This can be achieved in a number of different ways- the simplest of which is by using a python script to modify a static web-page, fetching server information from a number of configured devices using the OctoPrint API. This is also the safest, as it provides potentially malicious users no potential attack surface. See: https://docs.octoprint.org/en/master/api/printer.html#retrieve-the-current-printer-state Addendum: I'm no expert in web development specifically, just a hobbyist (I'm more qualified in Linux and game development)- but if no one else wishes to implement this but it is considered a good idea, I could give it a shot.

New Equipment for Space:

A separate cooler for TIG and Forge and Carts

We can easily make carts for the TIG and Forge, but each one needs different things and shouldn't really be right next to each other. Having a single cooler isn't really great for the hot work space, and a second cooler would mean we could just make custom carts for all of their related stuff and allow them to be positioned for working. This is especially important for the forge, it would be nice to have some bricks to help hold stock in the forge to slowly push it through without holding it, and this could be really nice with a custom cart that supports tuning the brick height, and also holds the cooler and cord and accessories. Similarly the TIG will have plenty of accessories and would be a lot nicer to use if it was able to be wheeled a little closer to work so you can change settings and reach accessories easier. Both of these carts could just be bought or we could make them out of stuff we already have, but the second cooler that simplifies the plumbing and wiring would make a big difference.

Less loud than a power hammer and just as good at most knifemaking or other forging work. This would be a very good addition to an Induction Forge and the Kiln. Shaper Tool ( Hand Held CNC Router )

As the Gerber CNC has been in development for over a year and projects larger than the Shapeoko can handle are inaccessible to members at the moment. A handheld CNC would allow a stop-gap to allow the working of much larger projects than can be contained within a table. Moreover, as it is portable... it could conceivably be used offsite for outreach events and other engagements (provided that event sites have the proper power requirements). https://www.shapertools.com/en-us/?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&utm_term=&utm_campaign=Dynamic+Search+Ads&hsa_ad=408374380483&hsa_acc=9056753060&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=b&hsa_tgt=dsa-857479494681&hsa_ver=3&hsa_cam=8700030679&hsa_grp=89037861818&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_src=g&gclid=Cj0KCQiAhojzBRC3ARIsAGtNtHWbip3PqxWGMGsX2ECDOiyjBUBE5Qe0ORbP8F9C3085nB9L9Kvh1FYaAv3SEALw_wcB https://store-us.shapertools.com/?_ga=2.162865717.820964076.1583511649-1161857651.1583511649&_gac=1.223762921.1583511649.Cj0KCQiAhojzBRC3ARIsAGtNtHWbip3PqxWGMGsX2ECDOiyjBUBE5Qe0ORbP8F9C3085nB9L9Kvh1FYaAv3SEALw_wcB

These clamps are great! https://www.harborfreight.com/48-in-aluminum-bar-clamp-60540.html - Light and super easy to handle - Plenty of force for most applications - Quite cheap for the HF ones which are probably good enough - Paul Sellers likes them https://paulsellers.com/2011/11/4473/ Currently there are only two and they are often in use. It would be nice to have a few more, maybe 8. 48" is a happy medium a bit less than most of the pipe clamps in the shop already—I also see 36" and 60" available. Come, reach into your wishing-wallet and let the clamp spirits smile upon MakeHaven.

New Equipment for Space:

2 inch high waterjet brick panels for cutting glass and more delicate or intricate parts inother materials.

A flat and uniform support for the glass is essential to avoid cracking. The Waterjet Brick works well for cutting glass. Cut on top of Waterjet Brick to avoid frosting the back side of the glass with slat splashback. Avoids the risk of sprayback from slat deflection as much as possible. If the precautions are not taken to avoid sprayback, the glasspiece can be frosted or broken outright because of the spray pressure from the deflection. Using something like waterJetBrick board allows the jet to travel through and help minimize the sprayback effect if the waterjet steam comes in contact with a slat. About the product: https://www.rhinoboardwj.com/about-us The design of the Rhino Board gives an even flat cutting surface and works well with abrasive and straight Water jet cutting. The water turbulence will rise and lower thru our product, which will reduce heaving of the material much better than standard bricks. LIGHTER The Rhino Board sheet weighs less than comparable amount of the old style bricks currently available, approximately 48% less, this saves on shipping costs but does not affect the durability of the Rhino Board. SIMPLE & FAST Rhino Board eliminates having to “BUILD” a bed out of smaller bricks which is both time consuming and clumsy during setup and removal. You can create a typical 6′ x 12′ bed of Rhino Board in a few seconds. TOUGHER Rhino Board will not fall apart as rapidly as the old style bricks, there are no screws used due to our patented bonding process, making repairs to the Rhino Board possible with a simple hot glue gun. CLEANER Rhino Board creates less polyethylene residue in the tank due to the tubular design. GREENER Rhino Board is partially made from recycled products and can be recycled again lending itself to be a very “Green” product. Cool ways to fastern materials to rhino board https://youtu.be/ZKVXE8XT2rE

1" x 42" Belt Sander, 4" Contact Wheel

We have belt sanders in the metal shop that are 1" but not in the wood shop. The 6" belt sander is great for taking off a lot of material and shaping but not good for fine detail and finishing. We have the same issue with the oscillating sander where the rounds and the belts tend to be lower grit sand paper that is good for shaping but not good for finishing. A 1" X 42" belt sander would allow us to use the same belts we sell for the Machine Shop in the wood shop and make getting finer grit and finish sanding on small or awkward shaped projects easier. Additionally it allows for slack belt sanding which we don't have in the woodshop currently.

This would fill a gap in the current torque wrench options (have: 40-200 in-lb and 50-250 ft-lb; missing: 200-600 in-lb aka 17-49 ft-lb range), and would be helpful to me & perhaps other future Prius DIYers :-)

FormLabs Build Platform 2

FormLabs Build Platform 2 is a new build platform with a flexible print service designed to make it easier to remove parts. Getting parts off of the existing build platform is a tremendous hassle, and frequently results in minor injuries to parts and the user. The new build platform flexes and causes the parts to just snap right off. We could start with just one for the most popular resin, or order multiple. The platforms are $299 each. I think starting with just one for either the white or tough resin might make sense. For all three resins it would be $687 + $12.56 shipping. https://formlabs.com/store/accessories/build-platform-2/

Wild Idea:

Rooftop MakHaven Radio Shack

01/18/20 I have an idea for MakeHaven Install two conduits along side of the building near the windows near the laser cutters going straight up to the roof level… one conduit for ac Power 220vac two phase. 50 Amp service. The second conduit, much larger and wider for all kinds of other cables…. On the roof above the conduits a Large Metal Storage Shipping Container, tricked out on the inside. Sloping wood roof shingled/Insulated, HVAC system on the roof. Doors, Windows, Sky light, Built in wood benches shelves for electronics and radio gear..lots of outlets, container grounded to steel building frame.. Connect the Make Haven, electronics/radio bench, and recording studio, to the MakeHaven Radio Stations (amateur and regular FM broadcast radio station), on the roof. Add antenna support masts to the Container and string antennas all over the roof top to the other masts.. Install Emergency Battery Power supplies and solar panels… get funding somewhere.. check on permits, building codes… work arounds.. Thoughts on Steel Containers.. they come in different sizes, would need a crane to get them up to roof top. No way a storm can knock them off the roof.. The all metal construction could be a Faraday Cage to keep out unwanted outside radio signals. There are office trailers, that might be used instead of a shipping container, They are not all metal construction. Both are available with HVAC…. A large container can be divided into Amateur Radio section and a AM/FM broadcast radio station. I found a way we can easily and legally go on the FM Broadcast Band.. and cover a 2 mile radius.. A few hundred dollars.. for the stereo FM transmitter…. Just some thoughts… thought you might be interested.. cost is really unknown... but I will take a guess.. rich…

Having just one machine with the Adobe Creative Suit available would extend capabilities for people across a number of different uses, as well as give people an alternative when the free software isn't giving us the results we need. The $660 annual price is the full price for a single license, but it may be possible that MakeHaven, as an education based space, can inquire about getting the reduced "educator" license price.

Matoha Plastell resin identifier

Many plastic recyclables in our area lack a stamp indicating the type of plastic used to create the object. This device would allow these items - including a significant % of caps/lids, to be sorted and recycled using the Precious Plastic machines: https://matoha.com/shop/plastell-desktop-18#attr=

New Tool for Lending Library:

Hydraulic Cable Lug Crimper & Wire cutter

This is a "must-have" tool for various projects that require large gauge wiring, like home renovation, building off-grid electrical systems, solar & solar generators, e-bikes, etc. "Hammer" type crimpers struggle to create reliable connections and the majority of Chinese hydraulic crimpers are sold with dies that are not properly sized for AWG. TEMCo crimpers are properly sized for AWG wires and very reliable, based on reviews. The best tool should be able to crimp as large as 4/0 AWG lugs and as small as 6 AWG (or smaller) to be versatile. It could be a valuable addition either to a lending library or as a new tool. https://www.amazon.com/TEMCo-Hydraulic-Cable-Crimper-TH0005/dp/B00HJXG3KM?ref_=ast_sto_dp

Dough Sheeter

Ever have the hunkering to make a large batch of tortillas?? How about homemade croissants? Roll out some pizza dough? We have a pasta roller, but the limited width makes it hard to do large batches or laminated dough. There are some nice tabletop 19" versions on etsy! Or some ambitious person could make one??!? https://www.etsy.com/listing/717932337/dough-sheeter-19-inch-dough-roller-pizza?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=dough+sheeter&ref=sr_gallery-1-2&pro=1&frs=1 You can also make a perfectly flat fondant for cake decorating... the options are endless!

New Equipment for Space:

Lithium battery spot welder

The "must-have" tool for building off-grid systems and lithium battery pack assembly. Lithium batteries are easily damaged by excessive heat and cannot be welded with solder irons, the only way to assemble them is via a suitable spot welder. The spot welder we have in the shop is large and not suitable for this kind of work. The best tool should be able to reliably weld pure 0.3mm thick nickel strips which will allow to build high amperage batteries (like 50A+ continuous output) that are required for modern applications like e-bikes, etc. The only model that is well reviewed, affordable and reliably does 0.3mm nickel is kWeld: https://www.keenlab.de/index.php/product-category/kspot-welder-kit/ Ideally, it would be great if we could get a full kit with supercapacitors, but even the basic one (https://gridrewired.com/en-us/products/kweld-spot-welder-kit) would allow doing the job using lithium battery packs. US reseller could be found here: https://gridrewired.com/en-us/collections/all , but, I think, it could be found cheaper.

Green Sweep

GreenSweep is a sweeping compound that can be sprinkled on a dusty shop floor, (see metal shop), and will then allow the inhabitants to sweep the area without raising a ton of dust in the air. It doesn't have to be used every time, but then nobody seems to be sweeping with any regularity. A 50 pound box costs about $30. While we're at it, are there any good brooms around? Where? https://www.globalindustrial.com/p/sweeping-compound-50-lb-box?infoParam.campaignId=WR&msclkid=ae476da09373173b015408419eb61202&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=[ADL]%20[PLA]%20[Janitorial]%20%7BSweeping%7D%20(Neutral)%20-%20[Normal%20SKUs]&utm_term=4583382952570685&utm_content=Janitorial%20-%20Sweeping%20-%20(Neutral)&adlclid=ae476da09373173b015408419eb61202
