Move beyond just using AI and start building with it! This hands-on workshop is designed for beginners who want to transition from chatting with models to creating their own functional software. Whether you are an artist, entrepreneur, or hobbyist, you will discover how to harness Python to build practical tools that solve real problems.

What to Expect

In this session, you will learn how AI applications are structured and how to integrate prompts into software. We will guide you through setting up a simple Python development environment and connecting a script to a language model API. You will learn to send inputs, process responses, and design effective prompts for specific tasks. By the end of the class, you will have built a small command line tool with a real use case that you can continue to improve at home.

What to Bring

  • Your Own Laptop: Please bring a laptop and charger to use during the session.
  • Preinstalled Software: Ensure you have Python and a code editor (preferably VS Code) installed in advance.
  • Internet Access: You will need to connect to the internet during class to access the API.
  • Optional API Key: If you prefer to use a specific paid model, please have your API key ready.

Who Should Join

This class is ideal for anyone with basic computer comfort who is curious about practical software building. While no prior programming experience is strictly required, you should be comfortable installing software and following technical instructions. For the best experience, a basic familiarity with Python syntax or the command line is helpful.

Important Details

  • Starter Code: A downloadable template and starter code will be provided so you do not have to type everything from scratch.
  • Technical Support: If you have trouble with the local setup, the workshop can be adjusted to use a browser based environment to reduce friction.
