Badging
How do I get a badge?
Most tools require watching a video, passing a quiz, and completing a hands-on checkout with a facilitator.
- Go to the Equipment list and search for the tool.
- Click on the tool's name to be brought to the tool page. On this page you'll see the safety video.
- Watch the tool's safety video in its entirety. This is your main learning about the tool. Rewatch if needed.
- Under PASS QUIZ, click the red button with the tool's name to take the quiz.
- After passing the quiz (note you do need to pass it with 100% correct! If you do not, rewatch the video as needed and retake the quiz) the badge will be listed as "pending" in your profile.
- Return to the tool's page. On the FACILITATOR CHECKOUT section, click the blue Make Appointment button next to the facilitator you'd like to book time with. Be sure to note the suggested checkout time for the tool and select the right # of appointment slots. Each slot is 30 minutes, so for example if the tool requires an hour, select two slots!
- You will get an email confirmation that your time is booked and it will appear at makehaven.org/appointments
- Compete your appointment with the faciliator as scheduled.
What does it mean to be badged? Am I a master craftsperson now?!
Being badged means you are cleared to use the tool. You have followed the steps above and met the criteria above and can practice on the tool. Badging gets you to a level where you aren't likely to hurt yourself or the tool. Keep practicing! All learning takes time. Put in the time to improve and develop your skills. If you get stuck, make a project advice appointment with a facilitator or post questions to slack.
Followups:
Some tools say "Badge applied after successful quiz" -- how does that work?
These safety hazad level 1 tools don't require a hands-on checkout. After passing the quiz, the badge will be active and visible in your profile. If you have questions about the tool, ask members on Slack or check in with a facilitator in that area.
Some tools say "Submit documentation or take a workshop" -- how does that work?
If you are experienced with this tool, you can upload documentation of your previous experience. Questions about your experience or this process? Email info@makehaven.org. If you haven't had experience but want to get some, check our events list for an upcoming class. If none are available, email events@makehaven.org to inquire about upcoming class dates.
Some tools don't have a badge -- how does this work?
Some hazard level 1 tools don't require a badge at all. You may use these immediately. Several do have informational pages on our equipment list. You can also ask members on Slack or check in with a facilitator in that area if you have questions about the tool.
What's the difference between a workshop and getting badged on a tool?
Most workshops are open to the public and designed to make a thing and therefore aren't focused on getting members badged. We do have some member badging events that result in a badge, and even some of our workshops can get you the badge as long as you've completed the associated video and quiz. If you're looking to be badged and aren't sure, just ask. Email events@makehaven.org
Facilitator Appointments
How do I schedule a facilitator appointment?
For a badging appointment, see "How do I get a badge?" above. For general info about tools, projects, etc: log into your user account on the MakeHaven website. Under Maker Resources select Community Facilitator Schedule. There you can request an appointment with the facilitator of your choice. Watch this video for more on scheudling and badging with facilitators. Remember that if you want a badge, you must have completed the online portion of the video and quiz and be ready for the checkout (with a pending badge) before scheduling a badging appointment.
What is a facilitator?
Facilitators are MakeHaven volunteers that dedicate 3 hours a week to helping members get cleared on tools and making recommendations on project steps and sticking points. They are not experts in the area, but rather practiced makers who appreciate growing the maker community. To learn about the project or apply, go to makehaven.org/facilitate
What can I expect from a facilitator appointment?
There are three main types of facilitator appointments: General Informational (no badge), Badge Checkout, Advice on my project (no badge). Here's how they work:
General Informational (no badge): designed for people who want to check in to see the tool, discuss various tool options (eg should I use a band saw or a chop saw for this?) prior to getting badged. If you watch the video and pass the quiz (or don't pass the quiz) but don't feel ready for your checkout, this is a good place to start.
Badge Checkout: For the person ready to start using the tool on their own. You have learned the basics from the instructional video, passed the video (your badge is listed as pending on your profile), and are ready for your checkout.
Advice on my project: Trying to figure out where to start, or troubleshoot somewhere you are stuck? This is the appointment for you.
Facilitators will do their best to help guide you forward. Remember, facilitators are volunteers here to empower your learning, not to do the work for you. You will need to put in the time and the work. If you are looking to pay someone to do the work for you, post a project on the #jobs Slack channel.
Followup: How do I cancel a facilitator appointment?
On the appointments listing, click the red link for the date & time of the appointment to be brought to the appointment screen. Under "Appointment Status" change the button to "cancelled" and click save.
Followup: A friend of mine is being badged. Can I go along and get badged too?
Badging appointments are intended for one person, to make sure that each person has the right time to meet their learning needs (don't get rushed or held up). But, if the original scheduler is okay with you joinging, and you both have similiar learning styles and experience, you can Slack the facilitator to confirm that would be okay.
What if a facilitator’s schedule doesn’t work with mine?
We try to offer many time slots to suit everyone's schedule. A good first step is to Slack the facilitator(s) for the tool you are looking to use and see if anyone has flexibility. If you still can't find a match, email info@makehaven.org with your needs and availability and we will try to accommodate.
