What to Expect

This workshop is offered as a POC-only affinity class, open to participants who identify as people of color. Expect a guided introduction to woodworking with plenty of hands-on time. Akeera will demonstrate each step before participants try it themselves—from surfacing lumber to cutting, gluing, shaping, and sanding. You’ll work with essential shop tools including the planer, table saw, chop saw, and sander. Once shaped, your board will be finished with food-safe mineral oil to enhance the natural grain. A scheduled lunch break mid-session offers time to rest and connect with fellow participants. All materials and safety gear are provided.

Skills You’ll Acquire

• Using core woodworking tools such as the planer, table saw, chop saw, and sander

• Cutting, shaping, and smoothing a cutting board blank

• Applying mineral oil for a durable, food-safe finish

• Understanding basic woodworking setup, workflow, and safety

What’s Provided

• Lumber for a 10” x 12” cutting board

• Access to all woodworking tools needed for the project

• Safety goggles and required protective equipment

• Step-by-step instruction and support throughout the workshop

Who Should Attend

No prior woodworking experience is needed. The class is designed for beginners and for anyone who prefers structured, supportive guidance while learning a new skill.

Prerequisites/Safety Information
