I was directed by someone at another Makerspace to a learning tool called MakeyMakey. They had a lot of success using it as part of an introductory workshop for both kids and adults. It is basically a tool to use electric sensors to trigger keyboard input. With this you can to lots of creative things such as playing the piano using bananas.  It is a more simple start for people who might otherwise be intimidated by Arduino and other kits.
