In this class, Ken will lead a group of 4 through the process of forging a self-handled knife from 1084 high carbon steel, heat treating it, then polishing and sharpening it.

These simple knives are comfortable to use and will serve their user well for a long time. Properly made, they can be a reliable camping/hunting knife or the perfect kitchen companion.

Induction heating is a non-contact process which uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to produce heat in a workpiece. By placing a conductive material into a strong alternating magnetic field, electric current is made to flow in the material, thereby causing Joule heating. In magnetic materials, further heat is generated below the Curie point due to hysteresis losses.

Using the induction forge, basic hammer techniques, and hand tools, students will cut, twist, taper, bend and smash steel into either a wizard wand or a BBQ fork of their own design.

This class covers Bridgeport (yes, Bridgeport CT!) safety, basic metal milling operations, and offers the skills needed to use the Bridgeport Mill. A Bridgeport mill is a standard manual knee-type vertical milling machine. The reason that many people refer to a manual mill simply as a “Bridgeport” is because it’s one of the most famous brand names that’s found in most machine shops.

This two day course is designed as an introduction to many of the tools and skills that can be taught and learned in a school Fab Lab or Makerspace. The items to be covered have been selected because they can most readily be implemented in a school environment, and typically do not overlap with a school's existing Career & Technical Education program.

Attendants will be given time to work with these devices themselves, and be able to take away samples and experiences.

Tufting is a process by which custom carpets can be made. The artist sketches a pattern on a cloth, then uses a tufting gun to inject the yarn into the cloth. During this session participants will learn hands-on how to tuft their own simple design. Each participant will be assigned the use of tufting gun and frame, all materials will be provided to create a rug approximately 20" x24". Over the two sessions participants will create a carpet of their own design which they can take home.
