Instructor: Randall Rode

Step into the world of traditional handcrafting and learn to build a functional vessel from scratch. This session breaks down the mechanics of stake and strand basketry, taking you through the raw materials, structural setup, and core weaving patterns used for centuries. You will learn how to handle, soak, and manipulate reed, working step by step to turn raw material into a solid, finished handwoven basket.

What to Expect

Expect a tactile, focus-heavy session spent getting your hands wet and working directly with natural fibers. We will walk through preparing the reed, setting up a sturdy base, and building up the walls using different strand counts. You will spend plenty of time practicing rhythmic weaving, managing tension, and troubleshooting uneven sides before locking everything down with a finished top border.

Skills You’ll Acquire

  • Structural Setup: Positioning the base and setting up rigid stakes to frame your vessel.
  • Weaving Mechanics: Controlling tension while executing two and three strand weave patterns.
  • Fiber Management: Soaking, prepping, and splicing new reed seamlessly into the body.
  • Rim Construction: Locking off vertical stakes with a clean, secure top border.

What’s Provided

  • All necessary reed, drilled wooden bases, and dyes.
  • Hand tools, trimming shears, and soaking stations.

Who Should Join

Anyone interested in functional art, tactile crafts, or learning a physical skill that requires zero power tools. This class is built for total beginners, but open to anyone looking to add weaving to their toolkit.

Prerequisites and Safety Information

No prior experience necessary. We will be using sharp shears to cut and notch heavy reed, so basic hand strength and care with hand tools is required. Age 18+

What to Bring

Bring a small hand towel to handle wet reed. All other supplies are provided.
