Modern Quilt Blocks: Break the Rules with Style
What to Expect
In the first session, students will dive into key principles of modern quilt design and practice constructing blocks using techniques like asymmetry, minimalism, and bold color placement. You’ll work hands-on with a sewing machine and learn how to design blocks that pop, using both guided patterns and improvisational methods.
The second session (November 16th) is a Guided Making day—participants can return to build on what they started in the first class or bring in a different quilting project to continue with support from the instructor and their fellow participants.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own fabric for the style and color palette they want to work in. A small selection of fabric will be available for practice and experimentation if needed.
Skills You’ll Acquire
• Design principles for modern quilting (negative space, asymmetry, bold color use)
• Techniques for piecing modern quilt blocks
• How to work with improvisational layouts
• Hands-on sewing machine use for creative piecing
• Pattern adaptation and block customization
What’s Provided
• Sewing machines and necessary tools
• Rotary cutters, rulers, and cutting mats
• Limited fabric scraps for practice
• Guidance and support across both sessions
Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own fabric to reflect their personal style and to get the most out of the creative process.
