Woodworking Joinery Series: Spline Joint

What to Expect

This is a hands-on, shop-based workshop focused on jig setup and accurate slot cutting. You will interact directly with shop machinery and hand tools as you practice running mitered joints across dedicated table saw jigs, milling contrasting spline stock, and gluing keys securely into place. We will spend time flush-trimming protruding splines, sanding surfaces smooth, and discussing grain orientation for maximum strength. By the end of class, you will have a finished test joint to take home for future reference.

Skills You’ll Acquire

• Jig Setup and Alignment: Positioning and securing mitered workpieces safely for table saw slot cuts.

• Spline Stock Dimensioning: Milling and fitting wooden spline keys to exact slot thickness.

• Grain Orientation: Aligning wood grain correctly within the spline to prevent joint failure.

• Flush Trimming and Finishing: Using hand saws and chisels to trim splines smooth to the surrounding surface.

Prerequisites and Safety Information

There are no prerequisites for participating, so all skill levels are welcome. Please wear closed toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid loose clothing or hanging jewelry while working in the shop.
