What to Expect

This is a tactile, machine-based workshop focused on simultaneously joining fabric and batting layers. The class format allows you to interact directly with the material, with opportunities to line up pre-cut fabric strips, manage fabric tension under the presser foot, and sew straight guide lines. You will also practice aligning and attached double-fold bias tape to seal raw edges for a crisp perimeter. By the end of class, you will have a completed placemat to take home for future reference.

Skills You’ll Acquire

• Simultaneous Layer Piecing: Learning the mechanics of anchoring decorative top fabrics and internal batting in a single machine pass.
• Material Alignment: Managing strip placement and overlap tolerances to ensure complete coverage without bunching.
• Edge Binding Application: Measuring, folding, and machine-sewing double-fold bias tape to create clean, durable corner borders.
• Machine Control: Utilizing standard sewing machine functions to maintain straight paths and consistent stitch depth along fabric edges.

Who Should Join

This class is designed for makers looking to expand their construction vocabulary and transition into core machine sewing techniques. It is the perfect opportunity for sewing beginners or anyone wanting a fast, repeatable method for creating quilted home goods without complex assembly. Participants ages 13–18 are welcome with parental/guardian supervision.

Prerequisites and Safety Information

There are no prerequisites for participating. Prior experience operating a sewing machine is helpful but not required. Standard safety protocols for textile machinery must be followed.
