QAYG: Quilt-As-You-Go Placemats!
Streamline your textile construction by combining piecing and quilting into a single, efficient process. This workshop introduces the Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG) technique, an excellent approach for smaller home goods. You will discover how to secure fabric strips directly through structural layers in straight runs, leaving with the practical skills and confidence needed to build clean, functional items like hot pads, runners, and mats.
What to Expect
This is a tactile, machine-based workshop focused on simultaneously joining fabric and batting layers. The class format allows you to interact directly with the material, with opportunities to line up pre-cut fabric strips, manage fabric tension under the presser foot, and sew straight guide lines. You will also practice aligning and attached double-fold bias tape to seal raw edges for a crisp perimeter. By the end of class, you will have a completed placemat to take home for future reference.
Skills You’ll Acquire
- Simultaneous Layer Piecing: Learning the mechanics of anchoring decorative top fabrics and internal batting in a single machine pass.
- Material Alignment: Managing strip placement and overlap tolerances to ensure complete coverage without bunching.
- Edge Binding Application: Measuring, folding, and machine-sewing double-fold bias tape to create clean, durable corner borders.
- Machine Control: Utilizing standard sewing machine functions to maintain straight paths and consistent stitch depth along fabric edges.
What’s Provided
- Low-loft batting, backing fabric, pre-cut fabric strips, and double-fold bias tape.
- Access to shop sewing machines, cutting mats, and layout tools.
- Thread in assorted colors and basic sewing notions.
