Trinket & Treasure: Polymer Clay Bowl Workshop
What to Expect
In this multi step workshop, you will dive deep into the world of clay construction and surface design. We will begin by decorating and forming the interior of your bowl for its first bake. While the base cures, the instructor will guide you through constructing a custom cane. You will learn to slice this cane into uniform scales and assemble them over your bowl for a second bake. The workshop will take a lunch break during this second curing cycle, giving your complex creations time to fully harden.
Workshop Highlights
- The Art of the Cane: Learn the secrets of caning by layering different colors of clay to create a repeatable pattern that can be sliced into dozens of identical scales.
- Double Bake Technique: Discover why baking in stages is the key to complex clay work. You will form the base, bake, apply the exterior details, and bake again for maximum durability.
- Assembly and Layering: Master the technique of overlapping slices to create a seamless, organic texture that mimics scales or flower petals.
Skills Learned
- Cane Construction: How to build and reduce a polymer clay cane to create consistent patterns.
- Precision Slicing: Techniques for cutting thin, even layers from a clay cane.
- Vessel Assembly: Building a functional bowl form and applying external decorative layers.
- Staged Curing: Understanding temperature and timing for items that require multiple trips to the oven.
