IoT: How to design & build an automation system

Learn the basics of IoT system design from the ground up. We will cover the various components that make an IoT solution, how to select the appropriate hardware, IoT framework and integrate them with a web or mobile application and when to build your own and when to buy. At the end, you'll understand how to design your own solution, whether for a hobby or for a product to sell.

While we won't be building a system, we'll review multiple examples, including actual hardware solutions of different complexities.

The class consists of 3 sessions, each an hour and a half long. Each session will include a presentation, real-world examples, a discussion about the approaches, solutions and vendors, followed by a question and answer time. The sessions are broken up as follows:

  1. General overview of an IoT system and a deep dive into hardware solutions.
  2. Deep dive into firmware and software, API design for different cases and building for web and mobile applications.
  3. Putting all the pieces together into a complete solution and care-and-feeding of the platform and hardware.
